South Africa is a country where people live in extreme poverty. The majority of the nation is unable to earn 3 meals per day. According to the World Bank 2024 report , 63.4% of people are living in poverty. However, where the country is suffering from poverty, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is busy granting payments to those families and individuals who are living in poverty. SASSA has 8 different types of social grants for the welfare of the nation. It has only one aim, which is to eliminate poverty and hunger from South Africa. In this article, we will discuss all the SASSA social grants for poor and helpless people. Also, I have explained each grant briefly so you can know about it. SASSA Social Grants 2025 Let’s have a look at the 8 different kinds of SASSA grants in 2025. 1)  Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 Grant The SRD Grant was introduced in May 2020 to support unemployed people in South Africa during the COVID-19 financial crisis. It was established under Section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004). The grant provides R370 per month to eligible individuals facing unemployment.  Initially created as an emergency response to the pandemic, it continues to offer vital financial relief to those in need. The SRD Grant is a key program aimed at assisting South Africans who are unemployed and struggling due to the ongoing economic challenges. Those aged 60 to 75 receive R2,185 per month , while those over 75 receive R2,315 .  This grant was introduced in 1920 to assist elderly individuals in maintaining a basic standard of living. It is an essential form of support for those who have retired or can no longer work, ensuring they have a reliable income to meet their needs. 3) Child Support Grant (CSG) The Child Support Grant, introduced in 1998, aims to assist low-income families in raising their children. It provides R560 per month for each eligible child, with an additional R280 for children who require extra care.  This grant helps alleviate financial pressure on families, ensuring children receive the support they need for their upbringing. It plays an important role in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of children in South Africa. With the help of this financial relief, the Child Support Grant helps parents provide for their children's basic needs, including food, education, and healthcare. 4) Disability Grant The Disability Grant provides R2,315 per month to South Africans who are physically or mentally disabled and unable to work due to their condition. This grant is available to people aged 18 to 59. According to Stats South Africa , 3.3 million people in the country live with some form of disability, as reported in 2022. This grant helps ease the financial burden on individuals who cannot support themselves through employment due to their disability. To apply, individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria, including proving their disability and financial need. The Disability Grant ensures that those who cannot work still receive assistance to meet their basic needs. 5) Foster Child Grant (FCG) The Foster Child Grant provides R1,250 per month per child to foster parents raising a foster child. This grant is available for children under the age of 18. It is designed to assist foster parents with the costs of caring for a child. To qualify, foster parents must provide proof of their foster parenting arrangement through a court order. This ensures that the individual is legally recognized as the child's foster parent. The grant helps ease the financial responsibilities of foster care, allowing parents to provide a better environment for the child. 6) Care Dependency Grant The Care Dependency Grant offers R2,315 per month to parents or guardians caring for a child with a severe disability. This grant helps cover the additional costs associated with raising a child with special needs. It assists parents in meeting the child’s medical, educational, and daily living requirements.  The financial support enables parents or guardians to provide the necessary care and improve the quality of life for the child. To qualify, the child must have a severe disability, and the caregiver must meet certain eligibility criteria set by the SASSA. 7) War Veterans Grant The War Veterans Grant is a tribute to veterans who served in the Korean War (1950–1953) or the Second World War (1939–1945). This grant recognizes their service and offers a monthly payment of R2200 . The grant is available to retired veterans who need assistance in their later years. It serves as a gesture of appreciation for their sacrifices and aims to ease their financial burden. With this support, the nation honors their contributions and ensures they receive the care and respect they deserve. 8) Grant-in-aid The Grant-in-aid is not a stand-alone grant but a part of the Older Persons grant, Disability grant, and War Veterans grant. It is a top-up grant for those who need a full-time caretaker. To bear the expense of that caretaker, SASSA provides R500 per month. Those who are approved for the Old Age Pension grant can apply now and get a full-time caretaker for themselves. Benefits of SASSA Social Grants Financial Support for Low-Income Families SASSA grants are an easy way of financial assistance to individuals and families in need, ensuring access to basic living essentials such as food and shelter. Access to Healthcare and Education Some SASSA grants are linked to additional services such as healthcare and education, giving recipients better access to necessary support for overall well-being. Promotes Community Growth By distributing funds to individuals across South Africa, SASSA grants help stimulate local economies, creating more opportunities for growth within communities.
